AUNT MARTHA HAS GONE TO HER GRAVE WITH A SECRET...
A SECRET NO ONE CAN LIVE WITHOUT!
You aunt was a scholar of witchcraft and dark magic. In fact, she was
working on a potion just before she was killed. Now the secret will go to
the grave with her... unless you can find the missing ingredients.
You, being her only living heir received news and came quickly to find out
she had plans for you to continue with her work. You gain title to her
estate and her fortune only if you continue with her studies in the field of
magic.
Travel through this ghostly mansion in search of clues for the missing
ingredients to the unfinished potion. Once found, mix the ingredients and
use the magic to perform the tasks that would make your aunt proud and save
your inheritance.
STARTING
To start your adventure, you must first run the CGASETUP program included on
DISK A. If you are running from a harddisk, simply get into the game directory
and type CGASETUP at the prompt.
To begin the game, follow these steps:
1. Load the mouse driver (if available).
2. Type A: or B: (whichever drive DISK A is located) and then press <ENTER>.
or... if you are running from a harddisk type C: (or harddrive letter) and
then press <ENTER>. Type CD \LASTHAF. Then press <ENTER>.
3. Type LASTHALF and then press <ENTER>.
If you are using a TWO DRIVE FLOPPY SYSTEM you will be required to "swap" disks
when going upstairs and outside. Simply take out the current disk and insert
the other, then press any key when ready.
Reconfigure Current Setup
To reconfigure the current game setup, such as the sound, speed, etc., simply
run the CGASETUP.EXE program once again.
Using a Mouse
Simply move the mouse to position the cursor on doors, windows, objects or
commands. Once the cursor is where you want it, simply "CLICK" either mouse
button to select an object to EXAMINE, OPERATE, etc. or a command to use.
The escape "ESC" key is your exit map and the "1" key is your inventory.
Using the Keyboard
If a mouse is not available the keyboard must be used. Use the arrow keys to
position the cursor over objects, doors, etc. or to select commands. Pressing
the NUM LOCK key will allow the cursor to move in larger increments around the
screen. Pressing it again will discontinue this function. Use the space bar to
"CLICK." The escape "ESC" key is your exit map and the "1" key displays your
inventory.
Selecting a Command
To select a commmand, simply move the cursor over the command of your choice
and "CLICK." For example, if you wanted to enter the house, move the cursor
to the command GO and then "CLICK." The command will hilight to show it has
been selected. Then move to the porch or inside the exit box (indicating the
porch) and "CLICK." Your new location will be the porch. Commands are:
Examine [F1] - (MAGNIFYING GLASS) - This command will examine an object more
closely.
Go [F2] - (ARROW) - Used to enter through a doorway, exit, etc.
Open [F3] - (OPENING BOX) - Choose this command when an object, door, or
drawer needs to be opened.
Close [F4] - (CLOSING BOX) - Use this to close objects, drawers, etc.
Hit [F5] - (FIST) - A command useful when violence is the only answer.
Take [F6] - (HAND PUTTING SOMETHING INTO YOUR INVENTORY) - Certain objects
are needed to complete your quest. Use this command to put them
in your inventory.
Speak [F7] - (HEAD TALKING) - To communicate with other characters, objects,
etc. use this commands. Once selected, type your sentence and
press <ENTER>.
Operate [F8] - (HAND PUSHING BUTTON) - This command will turn certain things
on and off. It is also used when you wish to use an object in
your inventory. To select an object to operate, simply position
the cursor on or near any object inside the inventory box and
then "CLICK."
Rather than clicking on the actual command you may simply press it's "QUICK"
key. For example, pressing the "F1" key is the same as "CLICKING" on the
command EXAMINE. Refer to the listing above for all "QUICK" keys.
Saving and Loading (DISK WITH ARROW)
To save a game for later use, select the SAVE command from the command list.
Once selected, a prompt will appear asking you for the current drive to
save. Press ENTER or RETURN if the default is correct. If not, select the
correct drive letter. If the drive is other than a harddisk, be sure to
insert a blank formatted diskette into the drive specified BEFORE entering
your save name.
To load a previously saved game, select the LOAD [F10] command. Be sure to
insert your SAVED GAME diskette in the specified drive BEFORE entering your
saved game name.
IMPORTANT: If you should accidentally select the SAVE or LOAD command, simply
press <ENTER> twice.
Quitting
To quit and return to DOS, select QUIT by pressing the "Q" key. Be sure to
save your game first if you wish to play it later.
Exits
The exit map (selected by pressing "ESC") is required to see all possible
exits at a given location. The exit map is a top view floorplan of your
location. All possible exits are indicated as boxes. The command GO can be
used within the exit map without having GO selected on the command list.
Simply move the cursor INSIDE the box and "CLICK." The result will be the
same as if you "CLICKED" on the actual door in the view screen.
Hints
* The first and most important hint is to look at the exit map in each room.
Not all the doorways are shown in the "main view." Without knowing all of
the options, solving this quest will be IMPOSSIBLE.
* When selecting an object to take, examine, operate, etc., be sure to place
the tip of the arrow on or as near as the object to select. REMEMBER: You
can press the NUM LOCK key to move the arrow in smaller increments.
* When operating an object, make sure that the exit map or inventory "pop up"
boxes are not covering ANY of the object to select.
* Objects that are in full view and show exactly what they are, such as a
caretaker or a path, will not reveal any "examine" information about them.
Try to examine hard to determine items, such as books, paintings, and
small objects.
* Although there are many puzzles in this game, there is only one solution.
Solving some of the puzzles may make it easier to solve others, while some
puzzles may not need to be solved at all.
* Save your game [F9] often and before you do anything too dangerous. DON'T
FORGET the LOAD COMMAND is function key 10 [F10] and cannot be selected
from the command list (although the disk icon will hi-light).
